ABOUT THE NORBUSUM FOUNDATION
The Norbusum Foundation has been founded in 2019 and aims to support the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage of Mustang and related regions. Its name refers to the ‘three gems’ (nor bu gsum) of culture, education and heritage. The NGO uniquely combines local working and organisational expertise with international academic expertise. It is led by Kunjon Thakuri, who since 2010 has a track record of organising community work, community research and the construction and management of a school. Other member of the board are Binod Gurung from Chuksang, Laxmi Gurung from Kagbeni, Tashi Bista from Namgyal and Tsewang Jigmi Bista from Lo Manthang. Each board member contributes a distinct set of expertise in youth work, education, community work, construction and tourism, and together they are meant to be representative of the Mustang region as a whole. Importantly, the foundation members are committed to work outside current power structures and aim for a sustainable and youth sustaining development of the region and its heritage.
Further, the Norbusum Foundation relies on the advise and support of international academics with a track record of research and engagement in Mustang and Nepal more broadly. Sienna R. Craig advises on organisation and community matters, John Harrison and Thomas Schrom advise on architectural conservation, and Christian Luczanits provides general organisational support and advises on conservation. The Norbusum Foundation supports his documentation of portable heritage and unless otherwise noted all photography on these pages are provided by him.
